You are correct about the definition of a check, it is one thing that you want to be alerted on. For example, if you had 5 servers and each server sends a free space notification every night you could set it up 2 ways. You can setup one check per server (5 checks total) and have each server send it's notification to a unique check. Or you could setup one check and have all the servers send their notifications to that single check.
